Drama review: My unfortunate boyfriend
Hi! I'm back with another review, this time it's 'My Unfortunate Boyfriend' the very latest k-drama I saw. This drama was really surprising and refreshing, but let's get to the main points.
'My unfortunate boyfriend' was produced by MBC, consisted in 16 episodes that aired until May 30 of this year. Of course it's a love story.
Plot : Tae Woon is called Mr. Unfortunate by everyone because he is too pure and honest, sometimes to fault. On the other hand Yoo Ji-Na, is a smart/arrogant girl who'll do everything to succeed, even lie. Different as they are of course they don't like each other at first and they'll get into a lot of messy situations before they can get along. Their background will also come up as they'll find out something surprising from the past that will link them forever. But can love really bloom?
Detailed plot (may contain minor spoilers):
The main character is Yoo Ji-Na, a 26 years old woman who just transferred into a big city to get a job. We don't know much about her past, exept that she comes from a small town near the sea, graduated from a 3rd rated college and is from a poor family who run a small restaurant.
It starts exactly like this, with that spoon. Yoo Ji-Na is taking an interview for a big company and as a preliminary test she has to come up with and ad for a spoon. While she is thinking about it, she meets 'Mr. Unfortunate' a weird guy who works as a florist.
With his, unconscious, help she completes her video-presentation and takes the interview. It all goes well until her boss, director Kang Hee-Chul ask about her education. Right then, a spider jump onto her profile sheet and while everybody is screaming Ji-Na kills it on the spot.
Unfortunately that spider belonged to Mr. Unfortunate, who is well know into the company as being a pain to deal with. So they leave the matter to Yoo Ji-Na, while not noticing that the spider's blood left a stain right into her college's name on the profile, so the director reads it another way mistaking it for a famous college in the big city.
Kang Hee-Chul, the handsome director of the company. I really thought he was the main character in the beginning lol, as he is the type to be.
Anyway, back to the story, she resolves the matter with him and is hired as a temporary intern with another girl, at the end of the year the boss will decide which one of them will stay.
On the other hand, the other girl, Jeong Hye-Mi, is used to always get what she wants so she is upset to divide that job with another girl. We'll soon find out she is rich, sofisticated girl with a good background and connections: her father is one of the company's major shareholder and she also knows well the director, so much she is in love with him.
Yoo Ji-Na who cares a lot about her appareance, dresses well but with fake brands but everybody mistakes her for a rich girl. Exactly like Hye-Mi, so right from their first meeting there are sparkle flying, it's war, to win the job and become a permanent employee at the company.
All that while, at work, the team has to work on a project for a natural park, Ji-Na and Hye-Mi are against each-other. The best will win after a number of rounds. But to keep going they need the help of a certain Dr. Seed. Upon discovering Dr. Seed true identity (guess who), Ji-Na gets even closer to Mr.Unfortunate and shares some other adventures with him.
At this point he starts to fall in love with her, hard.
At this point he starts to fall in love with her, hard.
He flirts her up while making Hye-Mi kind of believe they'll be together. He doesn't seem that interested with her but he needs her father's support so he accepts to go out with her. Of course his relationship with Hye-Mi and her father are a secret, nobody but them knows.
Hye-Mi later founds out Hee-Chul and Ji-Na met outside of work but still tries to be 'nice' to her when she heard some rumors about Ji-Na being Mr.Unfortunate's girlfriend.. since they are often together.
Nicest antagonist ever. Well that was before she knew Ji-Na was two-timing and still seeing the director.
So, what will happen? Will Ji-Na fall in love with Mr.Unfortunate or the director? And who is really Mr.Unfortunate? Will Hye-Mi hinder Ji-Na and taker her place at work? You'll find out.. if you watch it! :P
The pictures are a little messed up, ome belong to a later part of the story, but the message is the same. Well, I'm not gonna say anymore that this, or I'll spoil too much! Be sure to watch it!
Conclusion: Before going into specifics, I wanna say that I loved this drama so much I finished it in 3 days. I don't understand why it's so underrated, since it was so good. Acting was good, characters were funny and genuine. It's not your usual drama for sure, with the same old plotlines, it's different in a refreshing way.
Also, it's so rare to see a pure- romance nowadays, right? (Now I sound like an old fart) Please watch it, it's just so adorable it'll make your heart melt! :')
Below just random thoughts on some of the characters.
I won't beat around the bush, I thought Ji-Na was quite hateful at the start. She mistreated poor Mr. Unfortunate a lot and it took a while for her to make order in her mind. But then she grew on me, she worked hard and began to understand Tae-Won better.
I love how they made her the 'heroine'. She's not your usual main character, the poor innocent damsel in distress, Ji-Na's all but that and I like her for that. She's beautiful and she knows it, she has a sassy attitude, she is arrogant and doesn't have patience. Also I love how she makes the first move!! How cool is that? And she has a sweet side too.
Still, I don't forgive her for being such a player.
Tae-Won, Mr. Unfortunate, the best character in this drama. I just loved his pure innocent heart and personality. A lot of fans were disappointed Min Woo chose to play such a weak and dumb character, but I think they didn't understand a thing! To find such a character, a man who blushes (seriously, let's talk about it) instead of the usual too-cool-to-be true- one I say YES! Give me more of this kind! He was just adorable, so much I called him 'little puppy'.
For one, Hye-Mi was the sweetest antagonist ever. I swear, never ever have I seen a woman-antagonist who isn't just a b**ch in a drama. She is adorable. Of course she acts 'bad' too at times, after all she is Ji-Na's rival but she really doesn't do much against her. Hye-Mi just wants to be loved and recognized for her talent, not her name. I liked her a lot!
Yep and that's why I won't forgive you, Kang Hee-Chul! This man.. I hate him. For me, he was definitively the worst character. Don't fall for him! He may be the classic cool and hansome guy who is a simple love rival but no: he's evil, a player, an insensitive jerk. You'll know he's bad when he combs his hair back.. dear, don't do that you just seem old and angry.
Also talking about characters, shout out to these two:
Yoo-Na aka Mal Sook, the childhood friend and roommate of the main character portraied by Park Jin Joo. She is so damn cute!!!!
And this guy, the pervert and creep, Tae-Woon's roommate, Mansu. LOL he's hilarious!
Together they're just the best! I love them! I'm just a little bit disappointed they didn't have a proper ending like the other couples but whatever.
Random photos of the main cast during an official appareance. Just look at Min-Woo and Yoon Hak being cute together! Awwww!!
And to end it, this is the perfect picture. I just loved this couple so much, just looking at this makes my heart melt! ;_;
Make sure to watch 'My Unfortunate Boyfriend'! You can find it here streaming. :)
